The Amherst Lodge Fly Fishery, Lyme Regis.

This page provides answers to the fly fishing questions we are most commonly asked at the Amherst Lodge Fishery near Lyme Regis, Dorset.

Links to other fly fishing information appear at the bottom of this page.

Can I buy / hire tackle?

There is a tackle cabinet in the Rod Room with a full range of fly fishing tackle for sale. We also provide rod hire.

Which flies are catching trout at the moment?

The best thing to do is check the catch book and see what other people have been successfully fishing with.

What sort of trout have you got?

About 85 - 90% rainbow trout, the rest are brown trout.

What size are the fish?

Most of the fish are between a pound and a half and two and a half pounds. However there are a number of larger fish going up to double figure weights (15lb is the top weight - enough of them are stocked to be sure there is a real chance of catching one).

Do you allow catch and release fly fishing?

Yes - we call it a "sporting ticket". Anyone wanting to do catch and release fishing must read the special notice in the Rod Room before fishing.

If I buy a three fish ticket and catch them quickly, can I upgrade to a six fish ticket?

No. If you have bought a three fish ticket and caught three fish then you must either stop fishing or buy a new ticket. Obviously there are various combinations of this questions (e.g. upgrading from a two fish ticket to a four fish ticket or whatever - the answer is always no).

Can we use lures?

Cat's Whiskers, Dog Nobblers and the like do not tend to be particularly successful at Amherst Lodge and generally you will catch best using an imitative approach. If you want to disregard this advice and use big fluffy things anyway, that's up to you.

Do I need a rod licence?

Yes. You need a rod licence for all freshwater fishing in England and Wales - this is the law and it is policed by the Environment Agency. We do not inspect licences but an inspector from the Environment Agency could turn up at any time and the fine for fishing without a licence is over £1,000 (you may also lose all your fishing tackle).

Rod licences can be purchased from any Post Office. Please note that they are not sold at Amherst Lodge. As a guide, the 1999 prices for rod licences are as follows: Full year £18, (concession £9), Week £6.50, Day £2.50 - all these prices refer to the coarse and non migratory trout licence. Other rod licences are priced differently.

Can I have a look around?

If you want to come and have a look at the fishery before coming to fish here you are welcome to do so providing the fishery is not busy. At busy times we will refuse you entry so that anglers are not disturbed.

Do you allow dogs?

No.

Do you allow radios?

No.

What time do you open / close?

Open 9:00am, close at nightfall. You are welcome to arrive before 9:00am only if you book ahead.

Do you provide food / drinks etc?

Hot drinks are available in the Rod Room, we do not provide food so please bring your own.

Is there any accommodation nearby?

Yes, please see the listings page.

Can I borrow a…..?

No, unfortunately we have found that too many anglers ‘forget’ to return things. Therefore we ask you to make sure that you bring everything you need with you or buy it from us.

Can I bring a non-fishing friend with me?

Yes, it costs £1.00 per person for anglers friends or family to sit with them.
