The town of Honiton is an easy car drive from Lyme Regis and is known for its antiques, lace and pottery.

Honiton (pronounced 'Huniton' locally) is about a half hour drive from Lyme Regis. Many visitors to Lyme Regis make time to visit Honiton because Honiton is the antiques Mecca of the South West. Although the antique shops of Honiton are probably its most popular attraction nowadays, it also has a good number of shops specializing in pottery and lace.

Honiton is a pleasant and market town with a population of around 11,000 people. It is the principal shopping centre for much of East Devon and historically it was one of the centres of the West Country's cloth trade. Honiton is still known for its lace, the excellence of which has become known the world over. The town has a fascinating museum containing the world's premier collection of Honiton lace but you only need to stroll down the high street to see plenty of lace on display in the stores.

Disastrous fires in the 18th century destroyed many of the older buildings in Honiton. fortunately the rebuilding has created a town centre of distinction which is still largely 18th century. It is a clean, attractively built and prosperous town.

Honiton stands in delightful country of rich farmland watered by the River Otter and its tributaries. Steep sided hills rise up between Honiton and the sea and narrow winding lanes lead to villages that are as charming and interesting as any in Devon.
