"When the chips are down take great care - the seagulls will be after them".

Beach combing is a good way of spicing up what would otherwise be a boring old walk (and let's face it, most children reckon walks are pretty boring things). Beach combing is at its best after a good storm when the sea has washed up all sorts of odds and ends. This is a happy coincidence for holidaymakers unable to enjoy other activities due to the bad weather. It is extremely rare to find anything of value on the beach and despite the occasional horror stories, it is also rare to find anything toxic or undesirable. Nonetheless, it is wise for us to recommend that you supervise beach combing on a just in case basis...

Beach combing consists of wandering along the beach and searching around the high water mark for items washed up by the sea. The art of beach combing with children is to make it sound fun - is it just an old bit of wood or has it come from a pirate ship, was someone made to "Walk the plank" on it? etc etc. As soon as they're fired up, children can spend endless hours happily participating in a good hearty walk without ever realizing that they have been comprehensively conned.....

From Lyme Regis you can beachcomb to the East or West at low tide (check tide times here). For Western beaches follow signs to the Cobb (or Cobb car park) and head west along Monmouth beach (where you will also see fossils). For easterly beaches, park in the bottom of town or go towards Charmouth (Charmouth beach).
