Wining and Dining at Amherst Lodge

Meals at Amherst Lodge are produced by Katie who trained at the Paris Cordon Bleu before slaving in some notable restaurants in France, returning to England to run cookery classes and set up her own catering business eventually settling at Amherst Lodge.

Guests are asked to note that dinner is offered on a set menu basis and on selected nights only. Prices vary according to the menu but generally range from £17-£25 per person. There are also a variety of good pubs and a mixture of restaurants in the local area so there is plenty of choice.

For details of the numerous speciality Scotch Whiskies kept at Amherst Lodge, please scroll down or click here.

Wines: Our wine list is very short because many of our guests like to bring their own special wines with them. We have a house red and a house white, both supplied by Berry Bros and Rudd of St. James’s Street, London.

White Wine: Berry’s Sauvignon Sec, AC bordeaux. Light aromatic bouquet, dry, crisp and clean with excellent Sauvignon character.

Beers by the can: Boddingtons Draught, "Draught" Guinness.

Other alcoholic drinks: Pimms, Sherry, Gin, Whisky, Vodka, Baileys Irish Cream, Pernod, Tequila, Tia Maria, Archers, Sake.

Speciality Whiskies

Highland Malts

ABERLOUR

Aberlour single malt comes from the Spey valley, the most renowned whisky producing region. Matured in a fine balance of sherry and bourbon casks, Aberlour offers a rich, smooth, mellow flavour, marrying aromas of Autumn fruits with hints of spices including cinnamon and nutmeg.

AN CNOC

Knockdhu distillery nestles under the dark ‘Knock Hill’ known to the local villagers by its Gaelic name of ‘An Cnoc’, which provides the source of pure spring water for An Cnoc Single highland malt Whisky. Since the foundation of the distillery in 1894 the local crofting community has provided a skilled labour force who take pride in producing this distinctive malt of outstanding smoothness and quality.

AS WE GET IT

A cask strength pure malt whisky, the strongest alcohol by volume content of any of the whiskies held here at Amherst Lodge.

CRAGGANMORE

Cragganmore is an elegant, sophisticated Speyside with the most complex aroma of any malt. Astonishingly fragrant with sweetish notes and a smoky maltiness on the finish.

DALWHINNIE

From the highest distillery in Scotland, set in the windswept Grampian Mountains with their unlimited supply of fresh spring water, comes this delightfully gentle, delicately smoky malt with a heathery honey finish.

GLEN KEITH

A fragrant whisky from the heart of the Highlands, Glen Keith is prized by experts for its purity and its depth of flavour.

GLENMORANGIE Port Wood Finish

All Scotch Whisky is matured in oak casks and the flavour of the whisky is greatly influenced by the character of the cask. Glenmorangie says that the best casks are those which have previously held American bourbon. The bourbon seasons the wood, releases its natural sweetness and absorbs undesirable flavours. But it does not smother the subtle flavour of the whisky.

The casks lie in traditional warehouses (low, stone built, earth floored)situated close to the shore and permeated by the fresh sea air. While the spirit is ageing, it breathes through the cask and loses harsher alcohols to the atmosphere (this is known as The Angel’s Share).

The Glenmorangie started to experiment with the woods used in the maturation process and used casks that had previously held wines. The wine tended to dominate the flavour so they tried transferring the whisky to a different wood for its last few years of maturation. Trial and error led to exceptional results from Port Wood so they decided to bottle a small quantity and we have a bottle here at Amherst Lodge.

With a drop of water, the key aromas are butterscotch and dark chocolate. A bit water brings a suggestion of hazelnuts and hay. A remarkable whisky that is perfect after a good meal.

OBAN

An excellent all round malt which is extremely popular amongst West Coast Scots and most other whisky drinkers too.

BALVENIE

A smoky but mellow aroma, a smooth mature palate and a clean dry long finish with just a hint of sherry. It is a highly distinctive and delicious whisky with honey tones.

GLENLIVET

A very well known whisky with a light subtle bouquet and a mellow rounded flavour.

TULLIBARDINE

A distillery at the edge of the Highlands which draws its water from the spring which originally fed the first public brewery in Scotland during the 12th century. The product is a smooth and mellow taste with a fruity flavour.

SINGLETON

The Singleton of Auchroisk (trying spelling that backwards after a few glasses) has a deep rich colour and a velvety, nutty character. The underlying taste is pure and very mellow its oak case ageing is evident in the fullness and smoothness of the drink.

SPRINGBANK

Springbank is rarely found in Britain nowadays having now established itself as the best selling malt in Japan. Varieties are aged to 12, 15, 21 and 25 years and we have managed to secure a precious bottle of the 21 year old malt. Our suppliers have told us that it will not be possible to secure another bottle for the next three years which makes the already enjoyable taste a truly rare moment that is well worth savouring.

DALMORE

Described by some as a majestic whisky although quite what this means is open to interpretation. A beautiful colour, a great taste and a full bodied aroma make this a most enjoyable tipple.

Lowland Malts

LITTLEMILL

Pale in colour with a light aroma, Littlemill is very soft on the palate with a malty flavoursome taste. With a history thought to date to the fourteenth century, this is a distillery who know what they are doing.

AUCHENTOSHAN

A triple distilled lowland malt and the only malt distilled in Glasgow. The triple distillation contributes to its light, fruity, sweet and delicate yet surprisingly deep character.

BLADNOCH

The most southerly distillery in Scotland attributes some of the delicate, fruity and lemony aroma to the Broad Leaved Helleborine, a rare species of wild orchid that can be found growing in the ancient oak woodland behind the distillery. An interesting marketing angle that one, are they trying to corner the market at the Chelsea Flower Show? Orchids aside, it’s well worth a tipple.

GLENKINCHIE

Known as ‘The Edinburgh Malt’ due to the distillery’s situation in East Lothian, Glenkinchie has a light delicate nose and a fresh clean aroma. The finish is smooth with a subtle hint of dryness. A truly distinctive malt which is excellent as a pre-dinner drink.

ROSEBANK

A triple distilled lowland malt with a light distinctive nose and a well balanced flavour.

Island Malts

TALISKER

The only malt whisky to be made on the Isle of Skye. The distillery describes it as follows (and who are we to argue with this?): "The Golden Spirit of Skye has more than a hint of local seaweed peppered with sweet and sour notes and a memorable warm peaty finish". Although we are not so sure about the seaweed, this is one of our personal favourites.

ISLE OF JURA

Billed as the flavour of an island in a single malt, in which case there would be a long queue to be shipwrecked on this particular island. A pale whisky with a taste that hints at all sorts and offer the palate a moment to cherish.

CAOL ILA

The first of five Islay single malts held here at Amherst. Caol Ila has a wonderfully pale appearance, a fresh aroma and a light yet well rounded flavour. We think it is one of the better whiskies that we hold.

BRUICHLADDICH

Another Islay, Bruichladdich is one of the softest and most delicate of this distinguished group of whiskies. No one can fully explain what makes malt whisky malt whisky distilled on Islay so different. Experts regard it as a spirit apart, different in character and palate to the whisky distilled on the mainland. Bruichladdich (pronounced Broo-ick-laddie) is a rich, full bodied malt of smooth palate.

LAGAVULIN

The sixteen year maturation of this Islay Malty is intended to "take out the fire and leave the warmth". This is a lovely malt with a robust and smoky character.

LAPHROAIG

Probably the best known Islay malt (pronounced La-froyg) and one with an unusually rich flavour. The unique taste is attributed in some part to the local peat which is burnt and over which the malted barley is dried. A full gold colour with a seaweedy, peaty nose, a medium body, a richly smoky palate and a lingering finish.

TOBERMORY

Tobermory is the only distillery on the beautiful island of Mull. The whisky has is light amber in colour with a fresh, lightly peated, smoky nose. Its taste is medium dry, smooth and fruity. The finish is reassuringly rich and well rounded making it an ideal introduction to Island malt Scotch whiskies.

BUNNAHABHAIN

A soft mellow Islay whisky of great character and distinction with a hint of peat.

HIGHLAND PARK

All the way from the Orkneys and nicknamed Orkney’s Gold, Highland Park has been perfected over two centuries and has a balance of smokiness and heathery sweetness.

Blended Whiskies and Oddities

ULTIMA

This bit of fun from J&B is something a bit special. Their master blender has assembled a multitude of Scotch whiskies (and many that are no longer found) to create the ultimate blend of Scotch Whisky. It is made up of 116 individual malt and 12 grain whiskies, all of which are old and some of which are extremely rare. As each mouthful of Ultima swirls around your mouth, you can savour a unique taste which can truly be said to represent the taste of Scotland.

SHEEP DIP

Originally distilled in Scotland for the village of Oldbury in Gloucestershire, the peculiar name has generated a cult following. The name is apparently a nickname that farmers gave to whisky and which has been adopted by the distillery to brand its product. It tastes better than it sounds as though it should….

DEWAR’S

A well rounded, quite strong blended whisky that needs little introduction.

FAMOUS GROUSE

Probably the most popular blended whisky in the country.
