A DESCRIPTION OF AMHERST LODGE
Amherst Lodge lies in the hamlet of Yawl on the Devon/ Dorset border, just a couple of miles inland from Lyme Regis and the coast. The immediate countryside is some of the most attractive in the area. Amherst Lodge itself is surrounded by 140 acres of gardens, woodlands, fields and lakes. The secluded setting encourages a sense of tranquillity and adds greatly to the charm and atmosphere.
The extensive grounds are rich in interesting flora (including numerous specimen trees in the two acre garden) and wildlife about all around. The grounds provide opportunities for walks and fly fishing for trout as well as the chance to see a variety of animals including birds of prey, woodpeckers and numerous deer.
Amherst Lodge has a certain intangible magic about it which brings guests back year after year. Everyone has a different idea of what a stay at Amherst Lodge should be. You can try fly fishing, take quiet strolls around the grounds (or go to the coast for a bracing hike), visit picturesque local villages and pubs or simply grab a book and a deckchair and find a quiet spot in the wonderful two acre banked garden (see pictures) where you can enjoy the birdsong, the sunshine or the simple luxury of doing absolutely nothing! Lyme Regis offers seaside attractions and fabulous coastal walks and there are a plethora of other activities to whet most appetites in the local area.
