Amherst Lodge is a large traditional house which sleeps just eight people per night. There is always plenty of space for everyone and personal attention is assured.
Within the grounds you can try fly fishing, take quiet strolls or simply grab a book and a deckchair and find a quiet spot in the wonderful two acre banked garden where you can enjoy the birdsong, the sunshine or the simple luxury of doing absolutely nothing!
Out and about there is plenty on offer from local golf and riding to antique hunting in nearby Honiton and exploring picturesque Lyme Regis with its terrific coastal walks and world famous fossils. A short drive away are interesting gardens (Burrow Farm for example), magnificent homes such as Forde Abbey and the well known attractions of Abbottsbury. For more information on other things to do locally, please see our Visitor's Guide to Lyme Regis.
Amherst Lodge lies in the hamlet of Yawl on the Devon/ Dorset border, just a couple of miles inland from Lyme Regis and the coast. Originally a Devon long house, Amherst Lodge was converted in the 1920s in "the grand manner" to give the spacious and comfortable atmosphere which endures to this day. The house occupies a wonderful setting in a lush green valley with the River Lym running gently through the land and garden. The surrounding countryside is some of the most attractive in the area. Amherst Lodge is surrounded by 140 acres of its own gardens, woodlands, fields and lakes. The secluded setting encourages a sense of tranquillity and adds greatly to the charm and atmosphere. For more views of the house and grounds, follow the link lower down or click here.
Although the precise origins are lost in time, Amherst Lodge dates back several hundred years and is a house of tremendous character. The house overlooks the garden and stream to a bank which is planted with rhododendrons, azaleas and other shrubs. In spring the bank is covered with a stunning yellow carpet of daffodils and throughout the rest of the year it provides a splendid variety of colour and interest.
In 1974 the Lodge suffered a fire which destroyed much of the upper floor but thankfully did little damage to the ground floor.
The subsequent reconstruction allowed the owners to provide modern day comforts whilst remaining faithful to the historic look and feel of the Lodge. The beautiful oak panelled lounge retains many of the original features such as the enormous inglenook fireplace, bread oven and exposed beams.
(The black and white pictures of the lounge that you see were taken in the 1920's - it has changed a little but not too much!).Daily papers and magazines are to be found in the lounge and many of our guests gravitate towards the fireside in the evenings for a drink or simply to collapse in front of the flames. Interestingly, the 'lounge end' of the house is made entirely of Cobb. (Cobb is a mixture of mud and hay which is applied in layers and allowed to dry). It has been said that Amherst Lodge presents the rare opportunity of staying in a luxury mud hut!
Amherst Lodge has a relaxed, friendly ambience inside which we hope will make you feel as though you are staying in a home rather than a hotel.
You may get a taste of the atmosphere by visiting our guestbook and seeing what our guests have had to say about Amherst Lodge.
All the bedrooms in the Lodge have their own private en-suite facilities with bath and/or shower depending on the room. The oak panelled lounge is a good size and has a fire, books and magazines for lazy evenings and 'stay at home' days. There is a small bar stocked with, (amongst other things) 30 single malt whiskies to wash down evening meals (which are served on selected nights only - see wining and dining).
The extensive grounds are rich in interesting flora (including numerous specimen trees in the two acre garden) and wildlife abounds all around. The grounds provide opportunities for walk and fly fishing as well as the chance to see a variety of animals including birds of prey, woodpeckers and numerous deer.
Despite a wealth of rarities around the grounds, our most popular non-human by a long way is the amicable yet hopelessly idiotic "Tortin" (see right).

A Description of the Rooms in Amherst Lodge
All the rooms are en suite with TVs, tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers, luggage racks and so on. Each room is slightly different and we have prepared the following brief description for the interest of first time visitors to Amherst:
The Large Double Room:
Undoubtedly the best room is the house. It is extremely spacious and benefits from a luxury king size bed, sofa and extensive garden views.
The Normal Double Room:
This is a room of smaller proportions (although it is definitely not cramped!). The bed is standard queen size and the views are towards a field on the side of the valley which is often grazed by sheep during the summer months.
The Twin Rooms:
The twin rooms are comparable in most respects but the following differences should be noted: One twin room has garden views and an en suite shower (all other rooms have an en suite bath). The other twin room has views up the valley floor towards the lakes.
